fucking eh! someone's finally getting promoted!

i have been talking back and forth with the human resources department head and my manager for about 2 months about me not making quite enough money...

i know, you're thinking... wouldn't that open a can of worms being that i've only been there for 6 months? meh... i figured it was worth looking into regardless...



when i began working at Marriott, i had asked for a dollar more than what they start "everyone" at and told them i was willing to take the pay as long as my raise reflected my performance... well, they didn't do that... everyone got the same 25 cent raise and it was not really even enough to pay for my health insurance. so technically i'm making slightly less!

so i decided to let them know that i was hurting financially because of this and that i don't think i could keep the job too much longer and that i would be forced to shop around. there are a few jobs in the area hiring for the same thing i do now for more money and benefits... etc.

i guess it must have turned heads because the next thing i know they're looking for other options and speaking with the general manager about me. yesterday the human resource lady says to me "i spoke with the gm and he says that we need to do whatever we can to keep you and make you happy! i've got a position open for redcoat that hasn't been placed in advertisement... i think you are perfect for the job. let me know if you are interested!" she handed me the specs on it with a little more info... the last guy who was in the position is now the assistant manager in banquets, John, and he did a lot more man's work then i would be doing. that's because he used to be the setups guy in that department and was used to the grunt work. i wouldn't have to do all that shit, i would just have people do it for me... which was a relief! hehe

so i decided it's worth a shot, if i don't like it after 90 days or if they think i wouldn't work out for whatever reason then i just go back to AYS.... but if it works out, i am looking at somewhere around $30,000 year average! the reason it's uncertain is because the pay is based on $4.75 per hour plus a percentage of the event profits. which means the amount changes day to day with the event, but the hours are unlimited. i can work as many as i like. plus this is the slow season, so if i start now at the least amount of profits... i'll be able to get the full specs on it. i mean, that's twice as much as i make now! so i definitely am not complaining! when i looked at the chart explaining how percentage was, the LOWEST of the week was $6.45... but when you add my base pay to that, it's still $10.20 an hour. :D

i'm just so excited because i'm moving up already... and i'll be making damn good money for once in my life! it's about friggin time! i can't believe i'm finally appreciated somewhere... a lot of people complain about the pay there.... but they don't do anything to promote themselves better to get where they need to be in thier lives... and that's really what it's all about, isn't it?

i can't see how i could have a better month at work now... unless i'm the "employee of the month" then i could say it would be the best! but that's probably pushing my luck! lol although it is nice to think i was elected candidate by two of the girls i trained... that's really cool. it makes me just as happy just knowing that i really helped them.

Congratulations! :D

You did the right thing talking to your management about your situation. While some (meaning a lot) of folks are afraid to go ask for more from their employer, there is no reason to be afraid because:

a) Employers can't read minds (thank goodness). They won't know you're not happy if you don't tell them

b) Employers are always afraid of losing good people.

The employer/employee relationship is not supposed to be adversarial. It works best if everyone succeeds, and the easiest way for that to happen is for both sides to be motivated to succeed. :D Sure looks like that's what's happening with you at Marriott.
